How To Bomb Your Driver | Jack Nicklaus vs. Tiger Woods

How To Bomb Your Driver – by Daniel Lee

Whether it’s your dream of hitting 300 yard drives or it is an everyday occurrence for you, the key factor in generating power is momentum. Everyone can appreciate power like Jack Nicklaus did back in his day or the way you see Bryson Dechambeau hitting it over 400 yards. To create power like they have, means they must have a certain amount of room between where their golf swings start and where they finish. Therein lies the rub of determining the level of efficiency to create power and the differences between players swings. A golf swing like Nicklaus’s was much closer to freedom versus Tiger Woods 15 years ago or Jason Day’s that is taking a tremendous toll on the body.

If you intended to break down a door and you began with your nose pushed up against it…I think you can get the picture. When you are making a golf swing with your driver, power is applied through kinetic energy the same way. If you put the driver head down next to the ball, especially if it’s towards the middle of your stance, you have lost a considerable amount of easy power through the lack of space (and time). Placing the ball farther forwards in front of your center of mass (balance point), will allow you to comfortably start moving towards your target to release your body mass into motion. For a more detailed view of how to apply this, watch The Jack Nicklaus Over Achiever Drill.

Becoming a great driver of the golf ball and saving your body from harm should work hand in hand. Having enough room to move on top of your front leg and rotate through impact in the same manner you would turn to walk towards your target, will take the pressure off your back and other joints in the golf swing. The farther back your ball position is, the more that you will have to contort your body into positions that will internalize energy and likely result in physical injury. If you practice walking through your swings (think Gary Player) and realize that you are having difficulty creating a fluid stride through your swings, play with moving the ball farther forwards until your hips feel free to rotate through.

Learning to develop the power to hit a 300 yard drive, or learning how to create that much power without tearing your body apart, can be life changing for your golf game. If you have the opportunity take the Gravity Golf Challenge and learn how much fun a free swing can be. Enjoy your natural power that gravity has to offer all of us.
