In this video, I want to go back to the grip fundamentals. It’s always critical to come back to the most basic elements of your swing as you work in your mastery. New perspective can go a long ways 😉
Firstly, I emphasize the importance of wrist alignment. Your wrists should be naturally hanging vertically, forming a north-south axis. This alignment allows for a smoother and more natural swing.
Next, I recommend taking a vertical grip, ensuring that the club is straight up and down so that your hand goes around the club vs. going down the grip. This grip allows you to engage your fingers effectively and adds flexibility to your wrists. I demonstrate how to push with the right hand and pull back with the left, creating a grip that’s secure yet remarkably relaxed, almost the same way a chinese finger trap works.
The key takeaway here is that a proper grip minimizes tension in your hands, wrists, forearms, and even your shoulders and back. It promotes a more fluid and effortless swing, eliminating common issues like clubface closure or creating other types of compensations.
By following these grip techniques, you can reduce tension in the upper body, maintain a secure grip, and ultimately improve your overall release. So, the next time you find yourself in the short grass or any other cut for that matter, keep these tips in mind and enjoy a more relaxed and effective golf swing.
