5 Min a Day for Amazing Touch

Let your mass deliver the stroke so your hands can stay free for touch and feel.

When everything turns together from your axis, the motion becomes much more predictable. Think about throwing a punch or even taking a step when you walk. Your body works best when the mass moves naturally and gravity helps organize the motion.

Why Use a Wedge?

For this drill, I like putting with a wedge.

Using the leading edge of the wedge gives you immediate feedback. To catch the ball cleanly, the club needs to be moving slightly upward through impact.

That helps teach you to:

  • Get your weight organized properly
  • Create enough space in front of your body
  • Avoid hitting down on the putt
  • Turn through from your front axis
  • Keep your hands from taking over

I also recommend starting with the club in your lead hand only. For a right-handed golfer, that means your left hand.

This makes it much harder to cheat the motion by hanging back.

Find Your Front Axis

Set up with your weight comfortably on your lead side.

A good test is to pick up your back foot. If you can do that without having to jump or reorganize yourself, you are probably in a good place.

From there, don’t try to rock the putter back and forth or force it down a line.

Just feel everything turn together.

The goal is to let gravity and your mass do more of the work.

This same concept is something we work on extensively in our 3-Day Gravity Golf Schools, where we help players understand how balance, mass and freedom apply throughout the entire game.

A Simple 5-Minute Daily Routine

You can learn a tremendous amount from this drill in just a few minutes a day.

Minute 1: Hit short putts from about 3 feet on a level surface.

Minute 2: Move back to 5-8 feet and keep the same easy motion.

Minute 3: Practice from different lie undulations. Try the ball slightly above your feet, below your feet, uphill and downhill.

Minute 4: Find a downhill hanging lie. This is one of the best places to develop sensitivity for subtle putts because you cannot overpower the stroke. Gravity is already influencing the ball, so you have to become more aware of how little effort is actually needed.

Minute 5: Go back to your regular putter and see if you can keep the same feeling of freedom, balance and rotation.

If you want help feeling these positions in your own stroke, a Gravity Golf Zoom Lesson is a great way to work through the setup and motion one-on-one.

Find the Freedom

The same principle applies whether you’re hitting a 3-foot putt or a full driver.

You need enough space to move into the shot.

When things get too far back in the stance, most golfers end up trying to create leverage from the backside of the body. That makes the motion much harder than it needs to be.

Instead, learn to organize your mass, move onto the front axis and allow yourself to turn freely.

For golf professionals and teachers who want to go deeper into these principles, we also offer Gravity Golf Instructor Training, where we explore how to understand and teach these concepts throughout the entire game.

Find the freedom in your putts, your irons and your drives.
